THE CARE BEHIND YOUR COLLECTION

More than copying files.
A process you can trust.

Tape conversion makes recordings watchable again. Archive analysis turns scattered photos and videos into a collection you can understand. Here is what sits behind the finished result.

TAPE CONVERSION

From the original tape
to a digital video.

01

Agree the collection

We accept VHS, S-VHS, VHS-C, Video8, Hi8, Digital8 and MiniDV tapes. DVD transfers and printed-photo scanning can also be quoted. Tell us the format, quantity and any known problems. We confirm what can be handled, the scope, price and collection arrangements before starting.

02

Playback and transfer checks

Careful handling and professional playback are followed by transfer checks. The source recording and tape condition set the limits: digitising does not guarantee restoration of lost detail or damaged footage.

03

Deliver for everyday viewing

Digital download is included with tape transfers. USB is an optional media output, quoted in advance. We discuss how you want to watch and store the finished files.

ADVANCED FAMILY ARCHIVE · INDIVIDUALLY SCOPED

Make sense of the collection.
Keep its history intact.

Our archive engine has been developed around real mixed photo and video collections. These are the analysis and verification stages we can scope into an archive project—not automatic extras included in a tape-transfer price.

  1. Catalogue before organising

Build an inventory of the supplied files and their source locations. Keep originals untouched and work with organised copies, so tidying the collection does not rewrite its history.

  2. Read the dates inside the files

Examine embedded photo and video metadata, rather than relying only on a file’s current folder or copied date. Preserve relevant Apple photo/video relationships where identified.

    Why dates need interpretation

A download or copy can change a file-system timestamp. Embedded capture dates offer different evidence. Conflicting dates are flagged for review; approximate dates are labelled, and unresolved items are kept without an invented date.

  3. Identify exact duplicates

Compare file content to identify byte-for-byte matches. Highlight duplicate copies without treating a similar-looking photograph, edited version or different video export as automatically disposable.

    What a checksum tells us

A SHA-256 checksum is a digital fingerprint of a file’s contents. It supports exact-match checks and copy verification; it does not recognise faces, judge picture quality or prove a recording is complete.

  4. Build a useful timeline

Organise around the dates the evidence supports. Separate reliable dates, labelled estimates and unresolved items, making it clear where your own knowledge can improve the family story.

  5. Review the exceptions

Surface date conflicts and quality-control flags for closer attention. The report explains what was found, what remains uncertain and what needs a decision, rather than hiding the difficult files.

  6. Verify and explain the handover

For a verified archive build, compare delivered files against the source catalogue using SHA-256 checks and retain an audit trail. Agree the archive structure, report, delivery media and practical backup approach with you.

PEOPLE, PLACES & OCCASIONS

A foundation for richer discovery.

An organised collection is the starting point for finding the people and moments that matter. The faces and occasion categories in our leaflet illustrate that direction.

What is available—and what is a concept?

Cataloguing, date analysis, exact-duplicate detection, review reporting and copy verification have been demonstrated in our archive engine. Automatic people recognition and occasion-category search are illustrative advanced concepts, not standard live features or guaranteed deliverables. We will confirm any advanced capability and its scope before you book.

Preservation needs more than one copy

Verification confirms that copies match at handover. It does not guarantee permanent preservation. Keep more than one backup, on separate storage, and check it periodically. Any ongoing storage or support must be separately agreed.
